COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT (COLA)
On February 21, 2024, the OCERS Board of Retirement approved a 3.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for all OCERS retirees and qualified beneficiaries.
This adjustment will result in a 3% increase in allowances for all benefit recipients who will begin receiving benefits on or before April 1, 2024, with the remaining 0.5% allocated to their “COLA Bank.” Members can expect to receive this COLA adjustment included in the benefit payments beginning on the May 1st check.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APPROACHING
The electronic scholarship applications and the informational packet may be requested by e-mail at reaoc@reaoc.org or by calling the REAOC office at (714) 840-3995. You will need to provide an email address so that we may send the electronic application and informational packet to you or your relative. The informational packet will include detailed instructions on who can apply for the scholarships and what is needed for the process. The deadline for submitting the electronic applications is April 1, 2024. The required transcripts and reference letter must also be postmarked no later than April 1, 2024. REAOC will grant up to six scholarships this year; each scholarship will be in the amount of $4,000. Click here for additional information.

LUNCHEON REMINDER
Our luncheons are now held at the Elks Lodge located at 1751 South Elks Lane, Santa Ana, CA 92705. All the luncheons will provide a main dish, a salad with vegetables, rolls and dessert. Coffee, tea, and ice water will also be served.
The Elks Lodge is next to the OC Credit Union building on St. Andrews Place. The major cross streets are Grand Avenue and Edinger in Santa Ana. You will find plenty of parking spaces!

MEDICARE SAVINGS PROGRAMS
If you or someone you know is having trouble paying for healthcare costs, there may be ways to save money on Medicare premiums and other costs. You can get help from your state paying your Medicare premiums. In some cases, Medicare Savings Programs may also pay Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments if you meet certain conditions. The REAOC Board monthly meetings will continue to be held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month and we will utilize the online Zoom platform. If you have any issues or questions you would like to have us discuss, please contact the REAOC office at (714) 840-3995.

This proposed new State law would penalize cities and counties from $10,000-$50,000 a month for failure to comply with state zoning laws encouraging higher density residential development. Some have labeled it the proposed Nimby law. (Read More)
Thunderstorms could bring tropical feel to Southern California Monday
“Monday could have a tropical feel to it as warm and humid conditions bring a chance of thunderstorms, hail and lightning to Southern California. An upper-level low-pressure system centered near Phoenix is expected to drift west Monday, bringing moisture into the region, according to the National Weather Service. Senate sends $1.2 trillion spending bill to Biden’s desk in late-night vote to avert shutdown
In yet another example of congressional brinkmanship, Congress forwarded a federal budget to the President at the last minute, at least one member of the House called for the Speaker of the House to be removed from that office. The Senate in the early hours of Saturday passed a sprawling $1.2 trillion package to fund large swaths of the government, capping off a dramatic negotiation in the upper chamber and an intense months-long spending fight. The 6% commission on buying or selling a home is gone after Realtors Association agrees to seismic settlement
“The 6% commission, a standard in home purchase transactions, is no more. In a sweeping move expected to dramatically reduce the cost of buying and selling a home, the National Association of Realtors announced Friday a settlement with groups of home sellers, agreeing to end landmark antitrust lawsuits by paying $418 million in damages and eliminating rules on commissions.” (Read More)
ABOUT OUR LUNCHEONS
WHY
REAOC luncheons are held for the purpose of bringing Orange County retirees together for an afternoon of camaraderie, entertainment, and information. Friends and family are always welcome! Each luncheon features a different theme, with door prizes, and special gifts. As an added bonus, there is a valuable Progressive Drawing. They also serve as a general meeting for the membership.

Please note that we have a new venue for our REAOC luncheons. We will hold our luncheons at the new Elks Lodge in Santa Ana! The Elks Lodge is located at 1751 South Elks Lane, Santa Ana, CA 92705. All the luncheons will provide a main dish, a salad with vegetables, rolls and dessert. Coffee, tea, and ice water will also be available.

Cost for the luncheon is $20.00 per person. A reservation form is provided in The Informer (on the current Luncheon page), in the “Forms” section of the REAOC web site or you may email the REAOC office of your request (reaoc@reaoc.org).
Reservations for the March 27, 2024 luncheon must be received by no later than March 20, 2024.
